June is World Infertility Awareness Month, and we are highlighting 5 fertility tech startups in Singapore helping people be more proactive about their fertility health.

In 2020, Singapore’s fertility rate- the average number of children born to women during their reproductive years– declined to a historic low of 1.1, mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic putting a halt to most marriage and parenthood plans. Since 2021, the Singaporean government has been giving incentives like cash grants, preschool subsidies, and matchmaking tea dances to boost their fertility rate. However, even with the government’s stimulus, around 1 in 7 couples are unable to conceive due to health issues on both sides of the family. While infertility is not a disease, it can cause psychological and emotional disorders such as depression, anxiety, guilt, hopelessness, and turmoil. As a result, many couples are seeking out alternative methods of reproduction such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), and other technology. Here are 5 fertility tech startups in Singapore for those who want to build a family.

1. Carta Genomics

More than 1.8% of every 53,000 IVF children are born with a birth defect, and among 2.8 million babies 7,236 babies died before they turned one. Wanting to help IVF families conceive a healthy baby, Carta Genomics uses AI to analyse multiple genes to predict the risk of disease for each embryo. After the analysis, Carta will provide secure access and transfer of your genomic data. Founder Dr. Chee Yang Chen was born using IVF and wants to give back to the community through his genomic testing technology.

2. ChildHealthImprints

In Singapore, 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely. Premature babies are more likely to have chronic health issues including being more prone to infections, asthma, feeding problems, and also increased risk of developing infant death syndrome (SIDS). Child Health Imprints uses technology like IoT, artificial intelligence, and other predictive analysis, to help improve neonatal outcomes. Since 2018, Child Health Imprints has helped over 75,000 lives with this diagnostic technology.

3. E3A Healthcare

Jaundice is the most common condition which affects newborn babies, and 1 in 20 babies have a high blood bilirubin level that needs immediate treatment. Shawn Li founded E3A Healthcare to monitor jaundice in infants, using PTMaster, a phototherapy device combined with optoelectronics and signal processing. This provides an effective noninvasive care for newborns to improve their health. Currently, the startup has secured SG$1.5 million from investors in Hong Kong, and they also hope this device will expand across China and parts of Europe.

4. Fermata Singapore

From period health to sexual wellness, to fertility and pregnancy care, Fermata is a wholesaler website for all FemTech gadgets. With the goal to equip women with the necessary tools to understand and love their bodies, Fermata fights stigma and conception surrounding women’s intimate wellness in Asia. Their most well known fertility tech product is the Kegg 2-in-1 Fertility Tracker which is a device that is inserted into a women’s vagina to track their best ovulation window through a connected mobile app.

5. Hannah Life

Around 15% of couples are unable to conceive within the first 12 months of trying, and around 26% of the problem is due to both partners. Hannah Life helps couples conceive traditionally. Co-founders Prusothman Raja and Benjamin Tee developed a one-step solution to increase a couple’s chances of natural conception from the comfort of their own home. They designed the twoplus sperm guide because less than 1% of sperm reaches the egg. The flexible device is placed in the vaginal tract, which helps guide an increased amount of sperm to meet the egg. Hannah Life hopes for their affordable product to soon be available in fertility clinics, retail stores, and pharmacy chains to help couples conceive children.
