On Lok Yun

Wondering where to find the perfect cup of traditional Thai ice tea? This nostalgic café is the place to go. On Luk Yun has been offering its legendary traditional breakfast for over 80 years and little has changed in either its taste or decor. Huddled around this quaint spot’s old, Thai-Chinese-style tables, chairs, and wooden cabinets, you’ll find a mix of young locals, old aunties and inquisitive travellers who all come for its famous tea, served up alongside a variety of breakfasts from Thai-style to American classics.

Insider Tip: Stick to what they do best and order a Thai ice tea and Kaya toast for a taste of the old times. And, for a fully indulgent Saturday, wander across to Bangkok’s first-ever department store The Nightingale Olympic just a few blocks away for some retail therapy afterwards.

Sarnies Bangkok

This speciality Singaporean café recently opened in Bangkok’s hippest neighbourhood on Charoen Krung Road and has quickly become a favourite hangout around town. Occupying a large space on the ground floor of a corner shophouse that was once a boat repair shop, its stripped-back industrial decor and hearty breakfasts pull the crowds every day of the week. What this place is really known for, however, is its coffee, made with beans sourced all over the world from Chile to El Salvador to Northern Thailand and roasted in-house. With a gorgeous balance between modern comfort and an original, old shophouse vibe that reflects the unique nature of its location, it’s no wonder Sarnies has become a city staple.

Insider Tip: Cool down after a hot day strolling around the city with a refreshing Iced Coconut Long Black made with fresh coconut water.

Address: 101-103 Charoen Krung Road 44 North Sathorn, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500
Open From: 8 am – 5:30 pm

Joke – Congee & Curry Soup

Every city has a place where the early birds meet the night owls. In Bangkok, that place is Congee & Curry Soup, an under-the-radar local’s favourite serving up classic Thai dishes. Get your morning congee fix alongside a delightful mix of plates from different regions such as Kao Soi in the North and Fermented Sausage from Northeast Thailand as you squeeze in amongst the locals and tourists huddled up in this small, two-story eatery that offers a glimpse of city life alongside its tasty food.

Insider Tip: The Kao Soi and Tom Yum in Coconut may be a spicy start to your morning, but they definitely hit the right spot!
