Ap Lei Chau is home to a new recycling store, promoting waste separation and accessible recycling to the community of Hong Kong’s Southern District.

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) in Hong Kong’s GREEN@COMMUNITY has opened a new recycling store in Ap Lei Chau through the Hong Kong Southern District Community Association. Promoting waste reduction and recycling, GREEN@AP LEI CHAU opened on Tuesday, the 22nd of February to the local community.

Operating as a self-service facility over the course of the pandemic, GREEN@AP LEI CHAU collects paper, metals, plastics, glass containers, electrical equipment and appliances, fluorescent lamps & tubes, rechargeable batteries, and beverage cartons.

The recycling store will also offer night-time self-service recycling outside of its operating hours, neighbourhood Recycling Spots at regular locations that follow a fixed schedule, collection services to nearby housing estates, and educational programmes that promote environmental awareness.

The popup Recycling Spots will operate under a regular schedule in South Horizon, Shek Pai Wan, Wong Chuk Hang, Repulse Bay, and Wah Fu.

The Chairman of the Hong Kong Southern District Community Association, Mr. Chan Nam Po, BBS, JP said, “The Southern District is the one with the widest coverage among the four districts on Hong Kong Island while Ap Lei Chau is the island with the highest population density in Hong Kong. We are pleased to be appointed to operate the Recycling Store, GREEN@AP LEI CHAU, with the hope that it can assist to promote and educate the residents in the Southern District for waste separation for recycling so as to make the Southern District a greener and liveable community.”

The newest eco-friendly addition to Ap Lei Chau is also introducing GREEN$ (Greeny Coins), an incentive programme to encourage residents to recycle. Members of the public are invited to register as a member of the programme through the GREEN$ Mobile App or by bringing in at least 2kg of recyclables during their first visit.

“GREEN@AP LEI CHAU is located on Ap Lei Chau Main Street. It is a perfect and easily accessible location to the residents for reception of recyclables as there are lots of single and “three-nil” buildings with many large housing estates in the neighbouring areas. In addition, GREEN@AP LEI CHAU also provides night-time self-service recycling, Recycling Spots at regular locations every week, collection services to housing estates in the area and educational activities for environmental awareness. Residents can also benefit from the newly launched social media page @6green.apleichau for information on waste reduction and recycling. A convenient recycling experience is offered through a series of publicity and educational programs,” added the Chairman of GREEN@AP LEI CHAU Management Committee of Hong Kong Southern District Community Association, Mr. Chan King Wai.
