Besides being known for their good food, Taiwan’s HealthTech innovations carry the reputation of being the best. Here is a list of 8 HealthTech startups in Taiwan working to keep you healthy.

HealthTech startups in Taiwan are becoming more technologically advanced, inspired by current digital trends of integrating cloud computing storage systems, blockchain, and using smart devices as medical tools. Here are 8 HealthTech startups in Taiwan with the most creative innovations in the health technology industry.

1. iHealth

Besides delivering food, did you know that you can also deliver medical supplies and pharmaceutical drugs? iHealth was founded in 2014 as a HealthTech startup that lets individuals order prescription drugs online and have them delivered to their doorstep. This eliminates the risk of face-to-face interaction and avoids a trip to a hospital or clinic, especially important since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This platform is available to anyone who lives in Taipei, Taoyuan, and New Taipei City, with a delivery fee of TW$150 (US$5).

2. Health2Sync

Treating diabetes without proper care and facilities is very challenging to manage, and studies show that Asians have a high risk of having type 2 diabetes. Health2Sync developed a personalised app to monitor a patient’s glucose level to better manage their diabetes. The app keeps a full record of a patient’s blood glucose levels and daily activity through their cloud service provider, and also sends reminders, tips, and advice on how to improve their lifestyle. Another interesting feature about this app is patients can also invite their family to monitor their health and help keep them accountable.

3. DTCO

DTCO has developed blockchain-based platforms and services to help the specific needs of their customers. Because pharmaceutical companies have the right to sell your medical data, DTCO formed IPSeeds, a blockchain based P2P platform to collaborate between pharmaceutical and scientific fields. This inspired the development of phrOS, the Personal Health Records Operating System, a patient-centric application of blockchain technology with the advantages of insurance claims, security, and continuous care.

4. iXensor

Similar to the Belun ring, created by Hong Kong-based Lydia Leung to target a person’s sleep cycle, which then pivoted to a Covid-19 focus, iXensor is a mobile health company whose core technology platform can change smartphones into medical diagnostic devices for self-testing purposes. Using PixoHealth Hub, iXensor’s cloud storage server, individuals are able to assess their health. Users place a drop of specimens such as blood or urine on a test strip, let the device analyze it, and their smartphone will be able to detect their condition using the test strip’s colour change reaction and properly quantify the results. The iXensor can test for diabetes, chronic and infectious diseases, and women’s fertility. iXensor is also developing COVID-19 self testing products.

5. Ifit

Ifit, as the name suggests is an app-based community for fitness and health enthusiasts to interact with each other. In the app, users can interact with each other through sharing exercise videos and diet tips. Users can also review, recommend, and purchase gym wear and products. First launched in 2012, the app received funding of US$4 million by Cherubic Ventures.

6. iWEECare

iWEECARE provides monitoring solutions to optimise the health outcomes of its users of all age groups: from newborn babies to the elderly. The company developed a device called Temp Pal, which is a miniature smart thermometer designed to be placed under the armpit of an individual. The device can then be used to detect the temperature of an individual and give insights on body function through their bluetooth-connected platform. Using cloud monitoring, the app also tracks medication dosage and temperature changes to manage their health conditions. Medical records and health data can also be shared with their healthcare professionals.

7. WellGen

Founded in 2016 by Dr. Eason Lin, WellGen focuses on developing the identification and analysis of medical microscopic imaging for disease detection. In 2018, they were awarded the IAPS award for startups. Using their microscope, microscopic images can be scanned by a client and analysed on their server by cloud computing using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm and big data analysis. With the help of their microscope system and cloud computer, WellGen is improving diagnostic sensitivity and clinical outcomes.

8. APRINOIA

Founded in 2015 with US$18 million in funding, APRINOIA created the newest diagnostic and therapeutic technology for tauopathies. The neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer Disease, is a tauopathy. Currently, APRINOIA is developing PET imaging tracers to monitor neurological disease progression and their diagnostic tools improve the detection of occurrence, progression, and regression of any types of neurological disease. These diagnostic tools revolutionise the way scientific discoveries are made and also advance treatment technology and research for neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease.
