Superapps Gojek and MoMo join forces to link MoMo’s ewallet with Gojek’s ride-hailing app in Vietnam.

Gojek and MoMo are superapps from Indonesia and Vietnam respectively, and have recently announced a partnership to link MoMo’s ewallet with Gojek’s app in Vietnam. This move is a strategic one for Gojek, in an effort to battle the dominant ride-hailing app Grab

MoMo users outnumber Vietnam’s entire market for ride-hailing. As a result, Gojek gains exposure to MoMo’s 31 million users, a larger number than Vietnam’s 19.9 million ride-hailing and taxi users, estimated by Statista in 2021.

According to Gojek, people can use the MoMo app to pay for rides by motorbike or car, and food and parcel delivery. Nguyen Ba Diep, the co-founder and senior vice president of MoMo, stated, “Through this partnership, we also hope to help Gojek’s driver and merchant partners reach more customers, increase their income, and recover from the pandemic.”

In terms of new users, it is unclear how many new users Gojek can glean from the MoMo platform, considering it does not make direct referrals, rather requires users to find the app via its search function.

Despite this, IT consultant and director of Sunbytes, Amanuel Flobbe referred to adding payment options on Gojek as a “smart move,” adding, “Their approachable market increases with people who already are used to cashless transactions. I think this is an important step from an operational perspective.” Previously, Gojek only accepted cash and bank cards, while Singapore’s Grab uses ewallet Moca

Gojek Vietnam General Manager Duc Phung stated, “Our partnership with MoMo represents the first time Gojek is collaborating with a Vietnamese tech company, building on our complementary business strengths and a shared commitment to improve lives through technology.”
