Global applications open for the Redress Design Award 2022 as Timberland unveils their Lunar New Year collaboration with the sustainable fashion NGO’s 2020 award winner.

Hong Kong-based sustainable fashion NGO Redress has opened global online applications for the Redress Design Award 2022. For the 12th cycle of the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition, HK$50,000 (US$6,400) in development funding will be offered to the winner along with a design collaboration with Timberland and other additional prizes.

Key sponsors for the competition include Lead Sponsor Create Hong Kong (CreateHK), VF Corporation, Timberland, UPS, TAL Group, Lenzing, DAL Piper, ADM Capital Foundation, JUKI, Bloomsbury, and Fairchild Books.

To ring in the Lunar New Year, Timberland is debuting their sustainable 2022 collection designed in collaboration with the winner of the Redress Design Award 2020 Menswear category, Le Ngoc Ha Thu.

“This is a standout opportunity for the Redress Design Award 2022 winning designer to collaborate with Timberland, one of the world’s industry leaders in sustainability, to make positive change,” says Redress Founder Christina Dean. “The fashion world is screaming out for innovation to help it transform from polluter to pioneer, and the next generation of designers can help to drive this.”

Redress highlighted a key component for the competition will be the concept of embedding circularity into their designs. Over 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined in the design stage, thus this year’s judges will be seeking designs that emphasise low-waste, low-impact materials and processes, longevity, and recyclability.

To equip applicants and further educate designers with these key principles, the Redress Academy platform has been expanded with free in-depth resources to learn more about sustainable and circular fashion. This includes the Pathway Course, a free online programme rich in practical tips and featuring leading industry experts.

The Timberland collection will be available for purchase in stores globally. The pinnacle piece designed by the Redress Award 2020 winner, Thu, is a three-in-one parka and accompanying backpack, made from sustainable materials and featuring tiger motifs.

“The insights and experience I gained from Timberland are invaluable and have given me a more realistic view of sustainability in the industry,” Thu shared. “The Redress Design Award journey has been deeply rewarding and invaluable in kickstarting my design career.”

“It’s exciting working with a design talent like Thu, whose approach to sustainability marries progressive design with innovative techniques,” said Marco Pavoncelli, the Senior Director of Timberland APAC. “This is also a primary reason why we’re teaming up with Redress as Prize Partner of the Redress Design Award for a third consecutive year to attract top up-and-coming designers from all corners of the globe who are driving sustainability through circularity in fashion.”

Applications can be submitted online by designers across the globe, starting on the 6th of January until the 16th of March, 2022.
