Hong Kong’s Regal Hotels Group announced its entryway to the Metaverse, introducing the world’s first green metropolis, MetaGreen, on leading virtual gaming platform, The Sandbox.

Regal Hotels Group, the largest hotel operator in Hong Kong, officially announced its entry into the Metaverse with MetaGreen, a first-ever green metropolis to be featured on the virtual gaming space of The Sandbox. Aiming to build on the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework, the sustainability-themed plot of land will streamline smart infrastructure with eco-friendly alterations and sustainable connectivity to facilitate a circular economy within its virtual community.

Integrating their technology innovations with the foremost decentralised gaming virtual world, The Sandbox, a subsidiary of Animoca Brands, the plot ecosystem will harness blockchain, tokenisation, GameFi, play-to-earn and NFTs. The estate NFT purchased by the Regal Group merges individual lands into larger communities, known as Mega City 2, a green virtual district within the project MetaGreen. It is expected to be completed by October 2022.

Ms Poman Lo, the Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Regal Hotels Group commented, “Sustainability and technology have long been at the heart of our group’s DNA and passionately infused in our corporate initiatives and strategic investments. Web3 and Metaverse technologies will not only disrupt every facet of our daily lives, but also empower socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable impact in the world. The Metaverse, blockchain, and NFTs are here to stay, and our investment in The Sandbox puts Regal Hotels among the first hotel groups in the world to take a bold and leading role in the next iteration of the internet.”

The group aspires for its new venture to catalyse a sustainable future by propelling its industrial tech innovation and immersive new media as means to inspire and educate like-minded partners and stakeholders. Pledging to mitigate its carbon footprint, MetaGreen doubled its purchase of verified carbon credits necessary to offset its Ethereum emissions.

At present, the MetaGreen virtual estate features six uniquely interactive districts, including a green Regal Hotel allowing residents to display and exchange their sustainable tech innovations and elevate financial inclusion. The MetaGreen Convention Center, being the first meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) facility in The Sandbox, will host ESG-related sustainability virtual conferences demonstrating the next generation of the interactive corporate side of the Metaverse.
