You’ve probably heard of America’s vibrant food truck culture, and recently, Hong Kong has decided to adopt this growing trend. Under the implementation of the Food Truck Pilot Scheme earlier in February 2017, Hong Kong’s first ever food trucks created a hype that has been circulating throughout the city. Hong Kong now has a total of 16 gourmet food trucks including Beef & Liberty, W..Burger and Princess Kitchen. These vehicles can be seen scattered around 8 different tourist locations such as Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, Central Harbourfront Event Space and Salisbury Garden in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Each proposed food truck has gone through an intensive selection process, resulting in only the most authentic, aesthetically pleasing, and delicious menus to rise to the top. Not only does the scheme aim to boost the popularity of the tourist attractions around Hong Kong, but the food trucks serves to highlight local cuisine and to inspire creative fusion dishes.

Take the Pineapple Canteen as an example. A highly popular dish of theirs is a combination between Hong Kong’s infamous pineapple bun with Macau’s traditional pork chop bun. What’s the end result? A mouth-watering bun that gives you a sensational crunch when you bite into the sweet crust, and a flavourful burst of juices from the freshly seared meat.

What’s more is that this scheme operates under a rotation system whereby only two trucks can be stationed at each location. By switching locations on a biweekly basis, locals and tourists can have a taste of every flavour, whilst incentivised to travel around the city.

Despite the scheme’s limitation in size and number, we hope that the popularity of food truck culture will continue to flourish with more trucks joining the market in the future.
