Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibits The Picasso Century, as it maps out the remarkable work of Pablo Picasso featuring his interactions with various artists, poets and intellectuals throughout the 20th century.
The Melbourne Winter Masterpiece series is back, this time unveiling The Picasso Century exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International), Melbourne, from now until the 9th of October. The world premiere exhibition maps out the monumental career and life of the influential artist, Pablo Picasso, featuring some of his exceptional art pieces, and art discourse from various artists, poets, and intellectuals with whom he had intercepted and interacted all through the 20th century, some of the widely-celebrated names include Guillaume Apollinaire, Salvador Dalí, Marie Laurencin, André Masson, and more.
Exclusively exhibited at the NGV, the concept was developed by the Centre Pompidou and the Musée National Picasso-Paris, and is expected to display over 80 artworks by Picasso. In addition, the French National and NGV have drawn together a prodigious collection collectively, featuring the works of more than 60 of his contemporaries. Audiences can expect to uncover a fine selection and diverse range of art pieces that have never been displayed before.
Victoria’s Art Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson stated, “The Picasso Century brings together masterworks from across Picasso’s career, alongside those from other leading artists and innovators of the time. This world-premiere Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition will be an absolute treat for art lovers from across Victoria and beyond, and a massive drawcard to our creative state this winter.”
This thoughtfully curated collection by eminent scholar and Deputy Director of the Musée National D’Art Moderne, Didier Ottinger, probes the influences, encounters, and collaborative relationships from Picasso’s distinct artistic periods through The Picasso Century, from his Blue Period, to Cubism and Surrealism.
The President of Musée National Picasso-Paris, Cécile Debray, elaborated, “The Picasso Century offers an original, broad approach that allows us to grasp the artist’s career in his artistic and cultural context, from his formative years to his posterity. It thus offers an astonishing journey through the Parisian and cosmopolitan art scene of the 20th century.”
The Picasso Century explores his formative years and his artistic developments, along the lines of Cubism, an “experiment” almost radical which had significantly transformed 20th-century art.
It also conveys Picasso’s interpretations of inter-war Paris, along with his interactions with many historic names including André Breton, Georges Bataille, Aimé Césaire, and other intellects. Besides his mentioned notably work, the exhibition features rich and remarkable art pieces from Picasso’s Surrealist period.
Picasso’s post-1945 art will also be displayed at the final sections of the exhibition, and to conclude the exhibition and his legacy in the 21st century, the interactive contemporary video work “I see a woman crying (Weeping Woman)“, Tate Liverpool by Rineke Dijkstra is featured.
