Celebrating women all over the world – no matter how old or where you are.
From centuries of royal empires, past the Victorian era to the outbreak of World Way II and even currently today in some cultures; women are expected to be submissive to men. However, the inequality and oppression of females have slowly improved over time.
Women like Emmeline Pankhurst, who founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903, fought for married women to have the right to vote in local elections in the UK. “Deeds Not Words” was their slogan, and the WSPU were true to their words. Breaking windows, holding hunger strikes, standing firm against the men and fighting for women’s rights for 15 years finally led to the result of the UK Parliament giving women the same voting rights as men.
International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide on the achievements of women politically, socially, culturally and economically. Below are 6 quotes from empowering women who we hope will inspire you as much as they inspire us.
Angie Wong, Location Manager & Head of HR, the Hive
“Invest in yourself, it pays the best interest”
Angie’s investment in herself has paid off quite well as the charming Location Manager & Head of HR with excellent customer service skills. Like everyone else, she enjoys her food, spends quality time with her pet cat and exercises regularly. All of this is investment in yourself as making yourself happy, is the best thing to do in life.
Cindy Lam, Director, CLIP Ltd
“If you put your mind to something and you want to achieve the results you desire, you must persevere, persevere, persevere. Don’t give up your goals and always push the boundaries. Live life to the full and make sure you keep a good balance in life. That is my key to happiness and soon – more success!”
Starting from scratch has many challenges and competition from the industry. Despite all of this, Cindy gave it her all and started her own company – the results of living by her quote has proved itself as now she has gained several prestigious clients in the past 18 months.
Emily Manalo, Finance Assistant, the Hive
“Live within your means and you’ll never be corrupt”
Living by this guideline means that you don’t spend more than what you earn. Emily swears by ever since she was in college. We love her attitude if you want something; make sure you have the means now as opposed to “I’ll earn it later anyway”. Simple and practical!
Jasmine Smith, Creative Director, Raven + Rose
“Learn to embrace yourself beyond ‘The Male Gaze’ and the expectations of mainstream media. Push-up & perfection doesn’t equal sexiness or confidence. Owning both these traits is about having quiet comfort in your own skin, embracing its natural form rather than re-shaping it into something we as females have been lead to believe is the ideal.”
With a strong belief in the female form, Jasmine never fails to inspire us with her words. She informs us that when we stop trying to be perfect we start being powerful in the way we present ourselves, and this beautifully feminine power aids us in business meetings, in confrontations, in decision making and career changes. Embrace what you have!
Nadine Prowaznik, Founder & Head of Design, Veedelswerk GmbH
“It’s impossible,” said pride. “It’s risky,” said experience. “It’s pointless,” said reason. “Give it a try,” whispered the heart.
Nadine is always seen with a smile on her face and always brings positivity to those around her. You will always find her as the one who will be keen to try out new things – and thus living up to her quote!
Rebecca Lau, Editor, Hive Life
“No matter how big or small a job is; be true to yourself and do everything with honesty.”
The Editor may be petite, but she has a big heart. Telling us how based from a combination of being respectful and sincere to others can help to build trust in us. Thus meaning that one day, that trust created will spread to places that you never knew about and reach people you may have never met before.
