World renowned photographer Wing Shya launches CRYPTYQUES NFT collectible inspired by classic Hong Kong films in collaboration with local startup BEAM+ LAB and Mei Ah Entertainment Group.
Launching in June, CRYPTYQUES is an NFT project created by Hong Kong photographer and director Wing Shya. Developed in collaboration with local tech-enabled creative collective BEAM+ LAB and media distributor Mei Ah Entertainment Group, the Hong Kong movie-themed NFT collectible aims to bring classic Chinese movies into the Metaverse, connecting generations through the power of Web3.
Backed by global investors including blockchain platforms Avalanche and SNZ, BEAM+ LAB has raised over US$2.2 million in funding. Through their collective of creatives and influence in the local film production industry, BEAM+ LAB employs blockchain technology to revive Hong Kong arts and culture and share their heritage with a wider international audience.
James Li, the CEO of BEAM+ LAB commented, “BEAM+ LAB focuses on arts technology that promotes the entry of IP into the Web3 era, and missioned to build a community through art and blockchain. Our inaugural project, CRYPTYQUES is created to defy the norms of the entertainment industry by setting the tone of entertainment in the Web3 era. Through the partnership with Mei Ah Entertainment Group, we hope to shine a light on the golden era of Hong Kong classic films once again on the international stage.”
Not only an NFT collectible, CRYPTYQUES is also a crypto-quest, thoughtfully curated to evoke emotions and trigger memories through Hong Kong film concepts. Set to launch in 3 phases, viewers will be led on a Web3-driven journey through the past, present, and future.
The “past” phase will focus on the “7 Emotions,” including Desire, Fury, Fear, Joy, Bitterness, Loathe, and Love. Out of each emotion, a collection of NFTs will be derived, reinterpreting one of Mei Ah Entertainment Group’s classic films from the 80s. Starting with “Desire,” each drop will encapsulate its respective emotion in the form of a lost memory fragment.
“Desire” is a collection of 1,320 NFTs of 3D-animated video clips created by Shya alongside a Hollywood production team and will be available through “mystery boxes” starting in June, followed by an auction.
Wing Shya, the Creative Director of CRYPTYQUES shared, “The Hong Kong movie industry is built on the foundation laid profoundly by the predecessors who had a strong belief in exploring unchartered territory. Just like those who laid the building blocks for us, we are ready to create a new path for future generations. CRYPTYQUES takes a deep dive into another technological milestone that enhances the craft of cinematography, reimagining a form of artistry anew, and that we feel proud of.”
To kick off the launch of CRYPTYQUES, a series of offline events will be held throughout June featuring exhibits and behind-the-scenes footages of “Desire,” live performances, and workshops.
